OS9 Re-installation and Critical Data Recovery

OSX Re-installation and Critical Data Recovery

BackJack can recover your files from any computer, anywhere in the world as long as you have an internet connection and the four required pieces of information:

  • Account ID - three letters and 4 or 5 numbers (ie. WBT92892)
  • Password - the account's password
  • Computer ID - the name that identifies the computer (ie. Server, G4, JoeMac)
  • Encryption Passphrase - IMPORTANT: without this, recovery cannot occur as the only person who knows this is you or your account administrator

 

The following steps outline how to re-install and recover your critical files to a new or different computer in the event of a disaster:

  • Download the OSX version of BackJack using the link provided above, install, and launch the BackJack software
  • Enter the four required pieces of information when asked by the BackJack Setup Assistant -- Account ID, Password, Computer ID, and Encryption Passphrase -- Click 'Done'
  • When the BackJack Console window appears, click on the 'Maintenance' button
  • In the Maintenance window, select 'Rebuild List' from the pop-up menu and click the 'Start' button
  • Once the list is rebuilt and complete, close the Maintenance window and click on the 'Recover' button in the BackJack Console window
  • In the Recover window, select the item you wish to recover from your file tree
  • Click the 'Set...' button to set your destination for file recovery (ie. Desktop) and click Save
  • Click the Recover button.
  • Once your data has completely downloaded, quit BackJack.
  • Your recovered data will reside in a folder named 'BackJack Recover <date>'
