1. How are my files transferred? Is the transfer safe?
Before your files are sent, they are compressed and encrypted (for security). The process of encrypting your files means that no one else has access to your files while they are in transit nor while they are stored on the remote servers. You will establish your own encryption key during our Setup process. When developing BackJack, we made sure that we were implementing the best encryption technology available. Therefore, we have used the proven CAST 128-bit algorithm with the MD5 Hash function (extremely safe).

2. What exactly is my Encryption Key and how does it relate to security?
When you first install BackJack you will be taken through a Setup Assistant process. As part of this process, you will generate an Encryption key by entering a word or phrase of your choice (passphrase). This passphrase generates a key that BackJack will use to automatically encrypt and decrypt the files on your Mac (they remain in an encrypted format during the transfer and while they reside on our servers). Once your files are encrypted, the only way to decrypt them is using this passphrase. Since this passphrase is never passed to our servers, we have no way of knowing what it is. Therefore, if you lose the passphrase, we are unable to assist in a disaster situation (ie. when you would need to reinstall BackJack and rebuild your file list from our servers).

1. How do I know if BackJack complies with the regulations that affect my industry (ie. HIPAA)?
Over the past decade, major legislation has been passed in the U.S. affecting the way public companies, financial institutions, and medical care providers manage and store their data.
