How To Backup and Restore TextEdit Preferences

Description: This article shows you where to find your TextEdit settings files and how to backup and restore these items.

How to Backup TextEdit:

  1. Quit TextEdit
  2. Locate the ‘Preferences’ folder found here:
    ~/Library
  3. Within the ‘Preferences’ folder, locate the com.apple.TextEdit.plist file
  4. Copy this file to your backup media
  5. You have now successfully backed up TextEdit's preference file.

How to Restore Text Edit:

  1. Quit TextEdit
  2. Recover the com.apple.TextEdit.plist file that you backed up
  3. Copy it into here:
    ~/Library/Preferences
  4. Enter the username and password for an administrator on your computer and click continue
  5. You have successfully restored TextEdit's preference file.
